What is bhai dooj all about?

This is made of two words – bhai and dooj. Bhai means brother and dooj means “dusra diwas” after the new moon. Siblings used to celebrate this day together and enjoy. They also pray for each others’ happy, long, and healthy life.

Mythological story of bhaiya dooj

As per Hindu mythology, bhai dooj is the festival that is related to yamraj – the death’s god and Yamuna’s brother. According to these stories, they were missing each other so badly. So, his sister Yamuna asked him to visit her. One day, he finally visits her. On that day, she treated him and gave him so much of respect and love. She also applied tilak, tied kalawa, and offered him delicious sweets too.

After being so pleased with this, Yamraj gave her a boon. In return, she asked him to meet and visit her every year on the same day.

Another story is also there that is related to Lord Krishna and his beloved sister Subhadra. When he visited her after her marriage to Arjuna, she welcomed him with immense love and respect. She applied tilak, offered sweets, and blessed him too. After all these occasions, every year, this day is celebrated as bhai dooj.
