Congress President Election Results: New President will be Declared Today

The election for the new congress president was held a few days ago. And now, the counting has already started in Delhi’s AICC headquarters. It is for the first time 137 years when a non-Gandhi family member will become the president.

If we talk about the candidate, Shashi Tharoor and Mallikarjun Kharge are in the race. More than 9500 votes have been casted to choose the new president. The newly elected president will take the place of Sonia Gandhi who is handling the position since 2019 when Rahul Gandhi stepped down the post after losing the Lok Sabha elections.

While Mr. Tharoor has already pitched himself as a new face, Kharge is considered an unofficial “official” president of the Gandhi family. This is the 6^th time when non-Gandhi family members are fighting to become the president of the party.

This is a high-stake contest between the 2 topmost congress leaders. As per the party’s spokesperson, around 96% of votes have been casted through the ballot. According to the Madhusudan Mistry, party’s Central Election Authority head – of the 9,915 PCC delegates, 9,497 cast their votes across state capitals, including 87 at the AICC headquarters and 50 at the Yatra campsite.

A few moments back, Kharge’s election agent Gaurav Gogoi mentioned that it a historic moment. We're proud that we held poll in such a democratic manner. We also feel gratitude towards Sonia Gandhi who took charge of the party during a difficult time. In time to come, Congress will further strengthen.

This will be a historic moment for Congress and every worker of the party to have a non-Gandhi member as a new president. No matter whether Mr. Throor wins or Mr. Kharge handles the post, at the last Congress will going to be benefitted from their experience, knowledge, and a new perspective.
